This will be my last post on this blog. I'm moving my blog over to
The Angry Gnome for various reasons. So if you want to read what I'm writing now go there!
What is with that "Facebook" thing?
OK, so I have a
Facebook account? So what? I suppose if I was a social type who had dozens of friends who all were on
Facebook it might make sense, but the truth is I can barely read the tiny font they use, it's not very intuitive and I will probably never use it again :-) Except I know this one guy who is using it who will probably force me to mess with it constantly by sending me messages on it. Or, if I'm lucky, maybe not!
My objection is that it seems pretty confined and controlled, you have to use their methods for everything, it's all "form based" and I'm more a free form sort of guy I guess. Or so it seems to me at the moment.
It could just be I'm too technologically challenged, or it could be that it's really geared for a younger generation, or both probably.
Golden Gate Renaissance Faire
Lora, Serenity and me are all going on Saturday, I don't know if Mike will be going or not though.
Brave knights clad in shining armor thundering down the list on their spectacular horses at ferocious speeds trying to knock one another off. Stilt walkers, jugglers, fire- eaters and jesters perform over-the-top stunts. Swordsmen expertly wield their weapons in the daily sword tournaments. A court of justice dispenses punishment to children who did not mind their parents and husbands or wives who did not express their love enough times. Mud diving peasants kissing the feet of passing by patrons who happen to take the moment to peruse the scene. Two courts battling for power and prestige, Nobles in incredible, colorful garments of golds, silks, and velvet. The fourth annual Golden Gate Renaissance Faire, in San Francisco, CA., held August 25-26th is the ultimate Renaissance bash, a lively Dionysian party, where the guests enjoy turkey legs, exotic food, and drink as they banter with the myriad performers filling the streets. The event sports one-of-a-kind shows, music, and comedy.
Modern Cosmology: Science or Folktale?
This story in American Scientist is fascinating. It illustrates the uncertain nature of much that I had once accepted as "Scientific Fact" such as "The Big Bang." What I had thought was established fact turns out to be weak speculation! For me in my current phase of trying to fit what I "know" of science with God's word this is actually pretty good news :-)
Sequoia Park
Serenity and I went to Sequoia National Park last week. I went and picked up an inexpensive digital camera before we left and will be posting photos soon.
Here is one from Crystal cave with Serenity and her camp-friend Nicole.

More later...
Also, I got roped into a Facebook account by a friend, I'm not even sure what the point of that sort of thing really is. I suppose if all of your family and friends were on it then it might make a certain amount of sense, but most people I know are only marginally aware of the existence of Facebook. In fact, although I have an account there I am not sure why :-)
Happy Saint Larry's Day!
Today is the traditional commemoration of Saint Larry...
Laurence, Deacon and Martyr
Early in the third century A.D., Laurence, most likely born in Spain, made his way to Rome. There he was appointed chief of the seven deacons and was given the responsibility to manage church property and finances. The emperor at the time, who thought that the church had valuable things worth confiscating, ordered Laurence to produce the "treasures of the church." Laurence brought before the emperor the poor whose lives had been touched by Christian charity. He was then jailed and eventually executed in the year 258 by being roasted on a gridiron. His martyrdom left a deep impression on the young church. Almost immediately, the date of His death, 10 August, became a permanent fixture on the early commemorative calendar of the church. I am on vacation now. I'm taking a weeks vacation because Serenity's day care is on vacation next week so it seemed best that I take the time off as well. Yesterday we did nothing at all to speak of. Laundry, grocery shopping (I'm going back to my preferred diet, vegetarian) and Serenity practiced riding her bike without training wheels a bit.
Today we will be going to
Six Flags -Discovery Kingdom up in Vallejo, used to be Marine World. We went last week as well, it was a blast! We got 6 visit passes because they cost the same amount as the single visit tickets. There are lots of animal exhibits and shows and dozens of rides for the little kids and for Lora there are monster roller coasters. Weather is supposed to be in the upper 70s there today so I'm looking forward to a pleasant day.
On Monday I plan to take Serenity up to
Kings Canyon to camp for a few days, we'll see the Giant Sequoias and probably visit
Crystal Cave as well.
Sadly there will be no photos of any of this since my camera was stolen and I have decided not to replace it until I can afford a good
DSLR with multiple lenses...
True terrorism
ON THIS DAY, Aug. 6, 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, that instantly killed an estimated 66,000 people in the first use of a nuclear weapon in warfare.
The Holy Spirit
I was reading this morning and when I came across this passage I had a bit of an epiphany,
"In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. " (Ephesians 1:11-14, ESV)
The Holy Bible : English standard version. 2001. Wheaton: Standard Bible Society.
The epiphany that I had was in regard to the meaning of being "sealed with the promised Holy Spirit." I pondered that for a long time, trying to imagine just what that "seal" might look like. Was it some feeling of assurance one got? Maybe it was speaking in tongues? But then it came to me that it was nothing other than the very presence of faith in my heart at all! Faith is not our own work but is given to us through or by the Holy Spirit, thus the seal is the fact that we have faith. If we have faith, we know we have the Holy Spirit. :-)
Or at least that is how I see it.
