  Muslimaniacs
For a very long time I have tried to be sympathetic and understanding of the legitimate grievances of the Islamic world toward the west. But at long last they have exceeded even my patience.

They are completely clueless! This uproar over the Pope's speech is pathetic, no, it's worse than pathetic, it is completely irrational. Persistent irrationality is insanity, these screaming protesting Muslim idiots are insane.

This is even worse than the idiocy over the cartoons a while back. The Pope should NOT be apologizing to these blood-thirsty vermin. Instead, he should be calling for a new crusade to wipe them off of the stinking planet!

The thing is, the Pope is a wimp. He should not be making any sort of apology at all but should come right out and say what the truth is about Islam, it is a false, Satanic religion and if you follow it you will go to hell. Islam does not worship the True and Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, but a false God! It seems to me that Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaeologus was simply stating the obvious when he said, as the Pope mentioned in his lecture that triggered this uproar, "Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."

I'm really starting to think that Samuel P. Huntington was on to something when he wrote about the Clash of Civilizations in Foreign Affairs Summer 1993, 72/3. You should also check out his book, The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order, it's compelling reading, especially these days.

I'm no fan of the American Empire but we may not be able to avoid a major world war at this point.

This is all Bush's fault of course ;-)

  My day so far
I'm having an Oakland Raiders type of Monday today.

First, as I was leaving the house the garage door malfunctioned and I couldn't get it closed. After about ten minutes I managed to finally close the door. I rode off on my bicycle toward the BART station. Second, about a mile down the road I realized I had forgotten my wallet, and my BART ticket! I turned around and rode back toward the house. Third, as I approached the house I came up to the driveway going too fast and clipped the edge of the curb and crashed my bike. I parked the bike back in the garage and drove my car to BART. :-/

Since it is a well known law of nature that disasters comes in groups of three I am confident that the rest of the day and week will be much better. :-)

Daily readings
Job 4:1, 5:1-11, 17-21, 26-27
Acts 9:19-31
John 6:52-59

Psalter
Morning 89 Evening 90-92

The selection from John 6 this morning really matches quite well with the Higher Things reflection for the day:

John 6:52-59

52The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?" 53So Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. 57As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58This is the bread that came down from heaven, not as the fathers ate and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever." 59Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.

Higher Things reflection

Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” (Proverbs 4:23)

From the time we are small children, we are taught, “You are what you eat.” Hamburgers and French fries are very tasty. But if those were all you ate, sooner or later your heart would struggle to pump blood through your plugged up arteries. If you follow your mother’s advice to “Eat your veggies!” you will be much happier and healthier in the long run.

We come to find this true of our faith, too. If we fill ourselves up with spiritual junk food, we will be spiritually sick and weak. If we eat “heart healthy” spiritual food, we will be strong.

Spiritual junk food is feel-good food. We can consume the marshmallow fluff of some worship services and leave feeling an awesome sugar rush. But just like a sugar rush, the feel quickly fades, and you need more.

Then there are the things we consume that are really bad for us. These are things that give us a great rush. Premarital sex, shoplifting, and gossip are just the tip of this destructive iceberg. While you are in the middle of them, they seem great. But there are consequences to our thoughts, words, and deeds.

St. Mark 7:21-23 tells us,

For from within, out of men’s hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance, and folly. All these evils come from inside and make a man unclean.”

Heart healthy” spiritual foods make you strong. These are the Word and Sacraments. Our Father teaches us that if we want to be strong in our faith, consuming the Word and Sacrament will sustain us in our daily walk. We find them in the Divine Service, Bible Studies, daily devotions, and even discussing our faith with fellow Christians.

We are made strong, not because of anything within us, but because of what God places within our hearts and minds. At your baptism, the pastor said, “Receive the sign of the cross both upon your forehead and upon your heart to mark you as one redeemed by Christ the crucified.” God has filled you with His Spirit and His Word. It is for this reason God tells you to “guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” Trash in, trash out. Treasure in, treasure out.

When your words came, I ate them, they were the joy and my heart’s delight, for I bear your name, O Lord Almighty.” (Jeremiah 15:16)

Sola Gratia, Sola Fide, Sola Scriptura
Grace alone, Faith alone, Scripture alone

1 Corinthians 2:2 For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
