Thursday in Holy Trinity
“He richly and daily provides me with all that I need to support this body and life. He defends me against all danger and guards and protects me from all evil.” (Explanation to the First Article of the Apostle’s Creed)
In the Name of Christ. Amen. Where did you get that burger you ate earlier this week? Burger King? Where did they get it? Different wholesalers sold them all the individual ingredients that became that Double Whopper with cheese on your tray. But where did the wholesalers get their stuff?
More suppliers, and eventually farmers, were the source of the bread, lettuce, and meat. But where did the farmers get it? If you follow it back far enough, you see that all of the things that make a simple burger came from God – He gave the farmers the ability to raise the crops, He gave the employees the ability to assemble the burger after you ordered it, and He gave you the ability to earn (or creatively plead for) the cash to pay for it.
The same holds true for your jeans, your house, and even your computer. God gave someone the brains to figure out how to make a microprocessor and someone else the brawn to shove the components into a little box so that they would all work together (mostly).
In every aspect of life, God our Father is providing what you need to support your body and life.
Outside of yourself, He provides police officers to protect you from thieves and murderers. He provides resident assistants, apartment managers, and, yes, even parents, to ensure a safe living space.
“All of this,” the Small Catechism says, “He does only out of fatherly divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me.” What are we to do in return? Because of Christ, not much. Not much at all. Our duty is simply to, “thank and praise, serve and obey Him.”
Say thank you. Offer songs and prayers of worship and praise. Love God and your neighbor. That’s it. That’s all God asks for: a life of thanksgiving. That’s a pretty good deal in my book. Amen.
“Hallelujah! Let Praises ring! To God the Father let us bring Our songs of adoration. To Him thro’ everlasting days Be worship, honor, pow’r and praise, Whose hand sustains creation. Singing, ringing: Holy, holy, God is holy, Spread the story Of our God, the Lord of Glory!” (TLH #23, v.4)Daily Lectionary
