Wednesday in the First Week After Trinity
“For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God. Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge to us.” (Psalm 62:5-8)
In the Name of Christ. Amen. David is giving a pep talk. Not just to his people, but to himself, too. He’s trying to get himself and those around him to remember to trust in God.
David says that rest, real rest, is found in God alone. He sees what can come of those who get so self-absorbed that their goal is more important than the means of getting it. As king, he used some of those unsavory methods himself to get what he wanted. Remember Bathsheba and Uriah? Now, he sees the light.
“Put no trust in extortion.” Don’t even go there. Don’t abandon God or your principles to get what you think you want. After all, wealth and everything attached to it will fade away on the Last Day. You can’t take it with you, so don’t spend so much time trying to get so much of it.
“He only is my rock and my salvation.” This is where your focus needs to be. This is where there’s no chance of being let down, of losing touch, of getting left behind.
“My refuge is God.” Need to find peace? Need a break from the world? From work? From those unending summer classes? You will find it in Christ.
That’s why David urges us to “trust in Him at all times, O people.” God isn’t there on Sundays only. He’s always listening. So, “pour out your heart before Him.” Don’t have anyone to talk to? Can’t really trust your best friend with your secret? Pour it out before your Father.
If there is anyone you can trust, it is God our Father. When everyone else abandons you and runs away, He is still there. Still listening. Still caring in Christ. Still loving you, His precious baptized child. “Trust Him at all times.” Amen.
“Are we weak and heavy laden, Cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior still our Refuge – Take it to the Lord in prayer. Do thy friends despise forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer; in His arms He’ll take and shield thee, Thou wilt find a solace there.” (TLH #457, v. 3)Daily Lectionary
