Monday in the First Week After Trinity
“[The LORD] brought [Abram] outside and said, ‘Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.’ Then he said to him, ‘So shall your offspring be.’ And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.” (Genesis 15:5-6)
In the Name of Christ. Amen. Abram had a problem. He didn’t really trust God. Well, he did, but then he didn’t. Then he did, then he didn’t again.
Ultimately, you know what happened to Abram: Isaac is born and through this promised child, all the nations of the earth are blessed because the Messiah is born of his children. But before all of that, look at what happens to Abram.
Abram trusted God, but thought that he knew best. He let Sarai convince him that the quickest way to get the promised son was to use her servant Hagar as a surrogate mother.
This solved none of their problems and only caused more. Hagar and Sarai are at each other’s throats. Sarah doubts the word of her heavenly visitors that she will conceive in her old age. Eventually, Isaac and Ishmael are at odds, too.
Even through all of these problems and doubts, when Abraham and Sarah trust, then don’t, then trust again, the one constant is God’s faithfulness. He made a promise to Abram, and He was going to keep it.
Eventually Abram got it through his head that this was the case. Eventually he learned to believe and trust the Word of God. But it was a bumpy road getting there.
In that respect, Abram isn’t much different from us. Sure, he didn’t have an iPod or cell phone, but aside from that, what makes him so different from us?
You have heard the promise of God: Christ Jesus and His cross saves. We just have a hard time believing it. Thankfully, He gives us faith to receive it.
Trust that word and promise. Trust that you are God’s child, that He loves you now and always will, and that God will credit it to you as righteousness, too. Amen.
“O Lord, I have trusted in Your mercy; my heart shall rejoice in Your salvation. I will sing to the LORD, because He has dealt bountifully with me.” (Introit for the First Sunday after Trinity)Daily Lectionary
