Can wisdom be found inside of you? Your biology teacher or professor may think that he has wisdom, even as he spews forth mistaken lies regarding evolution. Donald Trump may think he has wisdom as he fires the fair and honest Apprentice candidate. Turn the channel, and the people gathered around the fire may think they have wisdom as they vote another non-Survivor “off the island.” On the other hand, you may admit that you doubt the wisdom of changing your major for the third time. But hold on a minute. Is any of this dealing with true wisdom – Biblical wisdom – Christ’s wisdom?
Jeremiah is preaching against those who have rejected the Word of the Lord. God speaks and His Church listens. Yet, many in this world refuse to listen. They cover their ears like a toddler and cry out, “I’m not listening!” But maybe it’s not always so obvious. And maybe it’s not always someone else!
When you are in church, sitting behind that cute little baby, and you spend time concentrating on funny faces and smiles rather than hearing God’s Word, you have rejected the Word of the Lord, so what wisdom is in you?
When you and your family decide to sleep in on vacation, and not bother looking up the names and times for Divine Services, you have rejected the Word of the Lord, so what wisdom is in you?
When you have stood quietly listening to your friends drag God’s name through the mud as a curse word and avoided “rocking the boat,” you have rejected the Word of the Lord, so what wisdom is in you?
However, you may rejoice! Rejoice that the Word made flesh has not rejected you! Rejoice that He has delivered you from earthly wisdom and placed true wisdom – knowledge unto salvation – in you! Rejoice that He has sent His Holy Spirit to call, gather, enlighten, and sanctify you in the one true faith!
I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. Philippians 4:11b
