God will not withhold any good thing from us. He will not always give us what we want. But He will provide what we need.
The preachers on television will tell you that God will give you whatever you want as long as you ask Him “in the name of Jesus.” If you want material wealth, simply trust God that “in the name of Jesus” He will make you rich. If you want power and influence, simply ask God “in the name of Jesus.”
God doesn’t give you whatever your heart desires, because He has a clearer perspective. God is omniscient (all-knowing). Our Father knows what is best for us. We might think that we are one hundred percent sure of what we need and want, but there is a problem with our judgment. When we ask for something, our sin clouds our thinking.
Sin has corrupted our judgment. We live in a fog so dense that nothing of our design can penetrate it. There is nothing we can do but wander in confusion. Our sinful flesh tells us that we can find our own way, but this will only lead us deeper into the misty delusions of our own design.
There is only One who knows the way out of this impasse. Our Lord, Jesus Christ knows the way. He has blazed the trail before us. He has passed through this foggy valley of life. He knows the way. We only need to trust Him to direct and guide us through this life. Our journey is dependent on our Lord’s direction. And where do we find the way to follow?
The answer is obvious. The Scriptures teach us the way to live as Christians in this world. Keep in mind that God does not give precise detail on specific decisions. God gives us the truth of the Law and Gospel through His Word. These are the principles by which we live our lives. There are no neon signs to point the way. There is only God’s Word of truth.
The Law opens our eyes to the reality that we are blind in our transgressions. We have to depend on our Lord Jesus Christ. The Gospel opens our eyes to the grace and glory of the forgiveness of sins.
God will not withhold any good things from us. The Law is good in that it drives us to the Gospel. And the Gospel gives us strength to live out our days in this world. When we acknowledge our inability to walk alone, God will guide the way.
I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. Philippians 4:11b
