Devotional and update
On Sunday I came down with a nasty chest cold and laryngitis. I dragged myself to work as scheduled this week but didn't have much extra energy for anything else. I'm still feeling pretty tired and woozy but since this is a day off I figured I could at least manage a short post here.
So far today I've done exciting things like pay all of my bills, thanks be to God I can actually do that and still have a smidgen left over! :-) I also took my clothes over to Harvey's Cleaners because I have decided I like having nice neatly pressed shirts. Later I'll be off to Safeway for a few groceries. How's that for thrills and excitement? Oh, and tonight I will be going to Holy Eucharist of course.

On Sunday the Queen Mary 2 pulled into San Francisco Bay. This is the largest ship ever to visit the harbor. I was up on the roof at work when it came in.
It was pretty cool watching something that size float into the bay.
Now, here is todays devotional from Higher Things:
February 8, 2007 - Thursday of Septugesima
“But Jesus did not entrust Himself to them because He knew about men and had no need that anyone should testify concerning men, for He knew what was in man.” (St. John 2:24-25)
In the name of Jesus. Amen. The words “believe” and “entrust” are the same in Greek. They “believed” in Him after seeing His signs and wonders. He did not “believe” Himself to them. He knew better. He didn't entrust Himself to them.
The Lord Jesus isn't impressed with what's going on with men – even when they believe in Him! Men get excited about the Lord all the time. They sing to Him. They praise Him. They commit their lives to Him – promising to follow Him unto prison and death. St. Peter said, “I will lay down my life for you!”
Yet before a rooster crows and St. Peter denies His Lord three times. The same disciples who promise to follow Jesus to prison and death run away when He is captured. The same men who sing to Him reject Him. The same men who praise Him, curse Him.
Feeling a twang of the Law yet? I know I am. We sing, we pray, we praise, and commit our way to the Lord. Then an hour later, we forget Jesus and what He did for us to run after what we want. We go from singing to Jesus to denying Him with our lives – in minutes!
No, He doesn't entrust Himself to men for good reason. When men get hold of Him at Gethsemane, they seize Him with clubs and spears – like He's a criminal. He is betrayed by one sinful man into the hands of other sinful men. He is abandoned by His disciples.
“Destroy the Temple and He will build it back up in three days.” He wasn't speaking of the Temple in Jerusalem. He was speaking of His Body.
What did we do? We destroyed Him! His Body was destroyed for us –beaten and crucified. And after three days, He did what He said. After the temple of His body was destroyed, He raised it on the third day.
Jesus doesn't entrust Himself to men, He is committed to you all the way to the Cross. He delivers His life-giving gifts which work faith, deliver faith and trust in Him, to you and me. That's the Gospel.
That's Pre-Lent! Repent of what you bring to Jesus – even your trusting Him. Then, trust and believe what He did for you. He gave up His life for you. He was raised from the dead. You were raised with Him. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
