Tuesday in Week 5 of Pentecost
“For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God.” (Romans 8:19)
Have you ever felt so full of something that you were almost ready to burst? So jam-packed with good news that you just had to explode?
The whole creation is that way over you, dear Christian! The birth pangs it now suffers – the daily hardships and labors and agonizing moments of pressure – all of that is because creation can hardly wait for the sons of God to be revealed.
And who are the sons of God? You know. They are the ones whom the Lord has made His children at the Font, the ones the Lord Himself baptized in the Name of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The sons of God are those begotten of the Father by the Son through Holy Baptism. The ones absolved in His Name and fed by His Body and Blood.
You, dear Christian, are the sons of God, and with every saint who is born again in Jesus and every saint who goes into the ground to wait the Last and coming Day of Resurrection, the whole creation groans a little more, expectantly, eagerly, awaiting the Day when all God’s children will burst forth.
On that Day, and not before, it will be evident to all what kind of children are the sons of God. For now, not only creation groans, but so do we, and so do those who know us. For now, until the Final Day, we are subject to sin and the Old Adam that still clings to us.
In the Creed, we confess: “I believe in the Holy Christian (catholic) and apostolic Church.” We believe the Church is holy because it is still an article of Faith, a thing hidden.
Look at yourself in the mirror; examine your life, your thoughts, your words, your deeds. Don’t they make you groan, dear Christian? Listen to your neighbor, your parents, your siblings, your friends, even your spouse or your children, if you have them. Don’t they also groan from time to time?
The fact that the Church is holy – that YOU are holy, as God’s baptized son or daughter in Christ Jesus – is not evident. Won’t be, until the Son of God returns in Glory! Doesn’t that make us groan with eager expectation till that Day arrives?!
It will, dear Christian. That Day is coming. And with every saint going into the ground and every ticking of the clock, it gets a little closer. What a Day it will be!
