Off to Montana
Mike and I are set to leave for Montana in the morning. While I will be taking my computer along with me and intend to post here, there are no guarantees on that, you never know when you will have good signal to log on...
Total miles for the trip is anticipated to be about 3,100. Dublin to Missoula to see Lora then to Little Big Horn then back to Missoula, then on to Spokane for a quick visit with Aunt Louise, then to Oregon City to see Dan and then home, all in 6 days :-) We'll be doing some driving.
Monday in the 4th week of Pentecost
“Who is a God like You, pardoning iniquity and passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage?” (Micah 7:18)
A remnant is a leftover, the last little bit, the rag-tag few. It is what remains after the Lord’s work is finished. But a remnant isn’t just “what’s left” to the Lord. No, it is the Lord’s “more”!
Look hard at yourself, O Christian, and learn from the prophet how to mourn your sin. The faithful man has perished from the earth. There is no one upright among men.
The majority of those for whom Christ died will never get around to admitting such a thing. The majority of men are still convinced that they are good; that they love God. How sad.
The prophet teaches us to mourn our sin and look to God for mercy. We can confess what others won’t because we have a God so different. He pardons our iniquity. He passes over our transgressions. He is merciful to the remnant of His heritage.
Who is the remnant? The few leftover among men whose only hope is that God is faithful to His heritage, to His inheritance. God wiped out His Son on our behalf on Calvary. He gave Himself for us, to purchase us, to make us His. The Lord is faithful to that, faithful to pour out blessings on those who were not wiped out when Jesus died in place of every sinner. The remnant are those for whom, because of Jesus, the Lord has always more to give.
You are the remnant, dear Baptized, who are left over since Jesus was punished in your place, the few He feeds with His Body and Blood, the few He absolves before His altar. God pardons your lovelessness, your lack of faith. He does not retain His anger forever. How could He, since Christ has suffered it all in your place?
It is Monday and the Lord’s Service is concluded. What remains now, since He was punished? You do, dear Christian! You are the left-over, the remnant, since Christ the Lamb of God was slain! And for you are all the leftovers of what Christ did to save you. That means there’s more for you to live from, more for you to hear, to receive. More for your pastor to tell you. Did you miss it yesterday? Do you need some more already? Good news! The Lord has stuff remaining – for you and your forgiveness – since the Cross.
