Tuesday in Holy Trinity
“Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! ...For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.” (Romans 11:33, 36)In the Name of Christ. Amen. Have you ever tried to explain the concept of the Trinity to anyone? Have you ever explained it so that it made sense? You have? May I please be the one who lights the fire when you are burned at the stake, you heretic?
It’s not easy to try and explain the unexplainable, but that’s pretty much what we are left with when we talk about our God. The Trinity is one thing – it’s supposed to be hard, I mean impossible, to understand.
As for the rest of God’s work, Paul tells us that those judgments are unsearchable. We, and people we know, are constantly asking, “How could God let that happen?” If we understood God’s mind, we wouldn’t need to ask. We would know.
And that’s the reality Paul quotes from Isaiah: “Who has known the mind of the Lord?” Can anyone get in there and make sense of it with our feeble brains? I think not.
Thanks be to God that we don’t have to understand His mind. If we did, we’d probably all feel a bit like Bruce in Bruce Almighty when he is first overwhelmed by all the prayers coming his way. Who wouldn’t blow a few fuses if that happened?
The job of the Creator is one that no one envies. Sure, some people say “If I was in charge…” But they don’t really mean it, do they? Who would be able to do it?
Instead of worrying about all the things that might need to be done to keep the planet spinning on its axis and to keep the asteroids from smashing into us, God has given us something else to do, something far simpler.
He has sent His Son on to this chunk of rock to save us from all the times we try to wrap our minds around Him. Trust him. He has all of creation, and you, in the palm of His hand. Amen.
“O measureless Might, Ineffable Love, While angels delight To hymn Thee above, Thy humbler creation, Though feeble their lays, With true adoration Shall sing to Thy praise.” (TLH #17, v.6)
