"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. " (Genesis 1:27-31, ESV)
So when God first created the animals they were all vegetarians. I wonder what a vegetarian Lion would be like? Or a vegetarian crocodile? Did their teeth change after the fall? After all, when you look at a carnivore today they don't look to be suited for chomping vegetation. How very strange to imagine that the original intent was for the lion and the lamb to lie down together, as they will in the new earth...
"The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze; their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea." (Isaiah 11:6-9, ESV)
Which means, I suppose, that there will be no steak dinners in heaven! That's no big deal to me since I'm not much of a carnivore, but I'm sure there are others who will find this idea distressing :-)
I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. Philippians 4:11b
