“Don’t worry, be happy.” This seems to be Jesus’ message in our verse for today. Is it really that simple? All we have to do is stop worrying, and everything will be all right?
The truth is that we have nothing to worry about, so it is a waste of time, energy, and resources. God is not like a watchmaker who creates a clock, winds it up, and then leaves it to run by itself. God knows all about the things that make us worry. He knows about our relationships with other people. He knows that we are concerned about money. He knows that we worry about what direction our life should be taking. He knows all our worries. He even knows that we sometimes question our relationship with Him.
Let’s face it. God has told us to obey the Ten Commandments and to live lives worthy of being His children. Well…how is that coming along? Are you really doing the very best you can? Or do you sometimes try to slip one under God’s radar? Satan, our own sinful flesh, and the world all try to bring into question our relationship with God. “How could God love a sinner like me?”
God knows our sins. He knows our past sins. He knows our current sins. He even knows the sins we have yet to commit. He has taken care of them all. So we need not worry about our relationship with God.
God has taken care of it. He sent His Son, born of a virgin, born under the law, to fulfill the law on our behalf. It’s a done deal! There’s no need to worry. We have God’s promise of salvation. Our eternal life doesn’t depend on our faithfulness to God. It depends on God’s faithfulness to us. There is no one in the world we can trust more than God.
If we can trust God with something as important as eternal life, then we can certainly trust Him to take care of the little details along the way. The birds don’t worry; the lilies in the field don’t worry; we don’t need to worry. God will provide. He always has and always will.
“Children of the heavenly Father safely in his bosom gather; nestling bird nor star in heaven such a refuge ever was given.” (HS 98 #888)
