A lazy roll, not even a shake

A light earthquake rattled the Bay Area tonight. I barely noticed it. I might not have noticed it at all but I was sitting and writing an email at my computer in a silent house and I heard a noise, looking to my right I saw the whiskey in my bottle of Wild Turkey 101 ripple slightly. When I looked online I found there had been a 4.5 quake up around Santa Rosa.
Even the smallest quake is good for a bit of an adrenaline rush :-)

Wednesday in the 8th Week of Pentecost
I wonder why some Lutheran churches say this is the 8th week of Pentecost while others count from Trinity and call this the 7th week of Trinity? Oh well I guess it doesn't matter. I'll have to find out though or it will drive me nuts :-)
Daily Readings
Deuteronomy 1:1-18 Romans 9:1-18 Matthew 23:27-39There are two passages that stood out for me in today's readings.
The first was in Romans, my favorite book in the Holy Bible by the way, where Paul says
"For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but "Through Isaac shall your offspring be named." This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring." This is telling us two important things I think. First, that we gentile believers are "Israel" as much as the Jewish believers. Second, it lets us know that the nation of Israel that is in the middle east today is not "Israel." Those Christians who get themselves all worked up over "last days" stuff by citing the existence of Israel on the land are simply wrong. This is not to say that supporting Israel is the wrong thing to do politically, but there is simply no biblical basis for it, so if that is your reason for being pro-Israel you need to rethink your position.
The second thing that jumped out at me was Matthew 23:34-36 where Jesus explicitly identifies Himself as God. This is important to me because I had been convinced for a long time when I was young that Jesus never called Himself God. I know now that He did so over and over again in the Gospels. This is just one more place where He did it:
34Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town, 35so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of innocent Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah,[a] whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. 36Truly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.
Therefore I send you He says. Jesus sent the prophets and wise men. Since it is only God who can send prophets, Jesus is claiming to be God.
