About those evil bureaucrats...
Yesterday I needed to expose myself to government bureaucrats in two different places. I had to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles to renew my drivers license, and I needed to go into the Post Office.
I was prepared for the worst. My ever present low simmering anger toward government was nearing a boil as I approached the doors of the DMV, I was ready to be angry and offended by slow, rude, incompetent creeps.
Naturally the evil bureaucrats stabbed me right in the back by being efficient, polite and even friendly and helpful. What treachery! I am deeply offended and angered by this behavior. How is a self respecting anarchist supposed to maintain a high level of outrage toward all government if they are going to go and do a good job? I mean, really!
The Post Office in Lafayette was just OK, quick in and out taking care of business. But the DMV, that was another matter altogether. There I had taken advantage of the ability to make an appointment on line. As a result I was in and out of there in less than 15 minutes, including getting my photo and thumbprint taken.
Now, this doesn't change the fact that drivers licenses are offensive in principle, being nothing more than a way of stealing money from the population and doing pretty much nothing to keep dangerous drivers off the road. But, the people who carry out the program are just working folk doing a job and I have to admit that the ones at the Walunt Creek DMV office are doing an excellent job.
I was terribly disappointed that I have no fodder for my anti-government rant machine, it's just not fair.
